Bengali new year Nabo Barsho Greetings, SMS

The Bengali New year 'Nabo Barsho' is celebrated in Mid April. April in Bengal is known as the Baishakh and is the very first month according to Bengali calendar. The festival corresponds to the Baisakhi of Punjab, Puthandu of Tamil Nadu and Vishu of Kerala. Historians say that the festival of Nabo Barsha was introduced was the great Mughal emperor, Akbar.

Bengalis decorate their houses with fresh flowers, make Alpana, (Rangolies) in front of their houses. Women wear traditional Red and White Sari while men wear dhoti kurta to take part in the early morning processions called Prabhat Pheries.

Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Lord Ganesh are worshipped on the Bengali New Year day. Traders perform the halkhata ceremony that marks the advent of the Bengali New Year. All shops are decorated with flowers and one will notice stringed fresh lemons and chillies hanging in front of shops. This is used to ward off the evil eye. Bengalis prepare both Vegetarian and non-Vegetarian dishes for Poila Baisakh.
