CJ Bacher Asian and Northwestern

Northwestern has run the shotgun spread since 2000, but the Wildcats tweaked their philosophy slightly when former Bowling Green offensive coordinator Mick McCall took NU's coordinator job in the offseason. McCall simplified the reads for veteran QB C.J. Bacher and insisted that he take what the defense gives him. The Wildcats haven't been much of a quick-strike offense, but they have been extremely good at putting together long drives. They rank in the middle of the Big Ten pack and the national rankings in the primary statistical categories : They are tied for 58th in rushing (147.6 ypg), 63rd in passing (209.4 ypg), 62nd in total offense (357.0 ypg) and 72nd in scoring (24.5 ppg). However, those numbers would have been bigger if Bacher hadn't missed two late games with a pulled hamstring and senior RB Tyrell Sutton hadn't missed the final four-plus games with a serious wrist injury. Sutton, who owns 3,772 career rushing yards and 37 TDs, hopes to return in time for the bowl game, but he's probably best described as somewhere between questionable and doubtful. There's little doubt Missouri will try to test Northwestern's offensive line that features three redshirt freshmen, a junior who had just three career starts prior to this year and a senior who didn't switch from the D-Line to the O-Line until last offseason.

Bacher will make the Alamo Bowl his 28th career start. For the most part, there's an easy way to tell if Northwestern won a particular game: Check Bacher's interception total. He owns 40 career TDs and 42 career INTs. In starts where he threw at least 2 interceptions, the Wildcats have gone 4-11. In starts where he threw 1 pick or none, the Wildcats have gone 12-0. He toughed out Northwestern's final two regular-season games with a less-than-100 percent hamstring, but ought to be 100 percent for the Alamo Bowl.
