President Barack Obama went to Chicago on Monday, June 15, 2009 to speak at a meeting of AMA (American Medical Association) which was the largest physician organization of the nation. From 26 years, it was the first time that a President has addressed the group. Health system reform was the key issue of that meeting. The main thing Obama wanted to tell was that the health-care reform bill will have to change the current payment system, in which doctors are reimbursed for every service and office visit, as it leads to waste and inefficiencies of money.
AMA opposed for the creation of a public insurance plan fashioned after Medicare to cover the uninsured so Obama decided to gave a speech. He made health-care reform a centerpiece of his domestic policy agenda and he wanted a bill passed this year. He clearly told that he expects doctors to give sacrifice along with insurers and drug companies as it will help financial aspects of the nation.
The main target of Democratic legislators is on insurers, pharmaceutical companies and medical-device makers about the high cost of health care but it is the doctor payments that consume one-third of the nation's $2.4 trillion in health-care spending and other one-third is consumed by the hospital payments. Obama tells that the hospital and doctor payments are increasing faster than the rate of inflation.
Obama noted that this time major stakeholders have came forward with their own plans than the past health reforms attempted. Due to the current situation, the nation is facing in the recession period it is important to change the health system reform. He also told that if we will not fixed the health care system then America will have to face the situation of paying more and getting less as well as economy of the nation will go down rather than coming up.
