The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) came into existence as a national standards organization of India on April 1st 1987 replacing the Indian Standards Institute.

In 1986, the Government of India decided to create a statutory organization which was named as Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to achieve development of activities of standardization, certification marking and connected matters. In 1986, Bureau of Indian Standards Act was passed by the Parliament and BIS came into being on April 1987.

The main functions of BIS is preparation and implementation of standards, operation of certification schemes both for products and systems, management of testing laboratories, creating consumer awareness and maintaining close relationship with international standards' bodies.

The headquarters of BIS is in New Delhi and regional offices in Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Chandigarh and Delhi with 19 branch offices. It has 25 members as a corporate body from national and state politics, industry, scientific and research institutions and consumer organizations.
