Gulaal in Kashyap’s film has nothing to do with the Indian festival of colour, Holi, or the colours that one plays with in the festival. Here it symbolises blood - blood that signifies relationships, betrayal, loyalty, patriotism, and many other hues of life itself.
Movie story
The story of "Gulaal" is alive Dileep (Raj Singh Chaudhary), an innocent students who come to Jaipur - the pink city of India, to conduct their studies. He is accompanied by his faithful earn Bhanwar (Mukesh Bhatt). Her face he Rananjay Singh "rans" (Abhimanyu Singh), a modern man who does not believe in traditions, much to the Chagrin of his father, the local Raja. He becomes ragged after Jadwal (Pankaj JHA), College of Goon and develops an emotional ties with Anuja (Jesse Randhawa), professor rough with him.
There is Kiran (Ayesha Mohan), who can use some for power and personal interest and Dukey Bana (Kay Kay Menon). Dukey is a local leader who has an army of radical Rajputs ready to win Rajputana back from the Government of India, through rebellion. A political twist enters the film when Ransa is convinced by Dukey and a few ex-Royal College of contesting elections on behalf of Rajputana party (Dukey lot). He is up to Kiran, the Secretary General's post. After Ransa resists several attempts to make him withdraw from the elections, he is murdered by Karan (Aditya Srivastava), Kiran's brother and Ransa’s illegitimate sibling. Now, Dileep is made to contest the elections and he wins it. On realizing that he is being used, Dileep confronts Dukey and uncovers an appalling truth.
After finding the truth about Dukey, the Mastermind of Rajputana movement, Dileep resigns from the post of Secretary General. Following this Kiran is sworn in as the new Secretary General. Soon she Spurn Dileep and try to get close to Dukey.
Gulaal is something that is extremely relatable, especially for today’s youth. Though at a running time of over two and a half hours, there are times when the film tends to appear dragging, it is worth a watch. The film though has Anurag’s now trademark abstractness at times, it is not as incomprehensible as it was in No Smoking or in Dev.D. Go watch Gulaal.
