Danica Patrick capped a perfect month of May with the biggest win of all, pulling away to capture his third Indianapolis 500 just five and a half weeks after being acquitted of tax evasion charges. Danica Patrick was third, the best finish by a woman at Indianapolis.Helio Castroeveshas won his third Indianapolis 500, beating 2005 winner Dan Wheldon by more than 2 seconds.

The race appeared to be developing into a three-car shootout among Dixon Danica Patrick and Tony Kanaan. Helio Castroneves started on the pole but began to drift back about one-third of the way through the 3-hour-19-minute race. When the race was restarted on the 109th lap, Castroneves sat behind only Dixon and Franchitti.
